Selinunte - Segesta Sicily - Sicily holidays

If you love the stories of ancient civilizations, this itinerary is designed for you. Begin your history tour with a visit to Selinunte, a Greek colony founded in 650 BC. and nowadays the largest archaeological park in Europe, with an area of about 270 hectares. Once there, don't be in a hurry: take all the time you need for an overall look, breathe deeply and imagine yourself in the remote centuries of Selinunte's splendor. During your visit, observe with care the different historical-artistic areas building this site. We especially recommend the Acropolis, with a panoramic view of the sea, the Temples of the Eastern Hill and the Sanctuary of Malophoros, a votive monument to the goddess Demeter. Finally, take a tour of the Baglio Florio Museum, inside the Selinunte park, to closely admire precious finds and unique testimonies of the never forgotten Hellenic civilization.

Not far from Selinunte, today as then, stands its worst enemy: the ancient city of Segesta, located in the Calatafimi district and dating back to the 9th century BC. Today it is the second archaeological pearl of Western Sicily and definitely deserves to be part of your tour in the lost centuries. Segesta and Selinunte were involved in numerous battles for domination of the territory and commercial supremacy.

The archaeological site of Segesta is distinguished by two main monuments: the Doric Temple, majestic and with six columns, and the Greek Theater of the third century BC. C. These two attractions are located in opposite areas of the park, about 2 km away, which is why, when purchasing the ticket, you can opt for the bus service inside the complex. If you visit Segesta in late spring or summer, we recommend that you take advantage of it, so as not to waste energies, better expendable in the knowledge of the archaeological site.
